The 2011 Annual Convention, held July 24
to 26 at The Rosseau, a JW Marriott
Resort, set a new attendance record,
with 125 adults and 47 children in
attendance. Attendees were welcomed to
the Muskoka region of Ontario by UCA
president, Namby Vithiananthan where
they were treated to warm, sunny
weather.
After
meeting old friends and making new ones
at the Registration and Welcome
Hospitality on Sunday afternoon,
everyone was treated to the “Parisian
Professor’s Party”, a night at a French
bistro. During a family-style
continental dinner the delegates enjoyed
a guitar serenade, followed by a
side-splitting comedic musical
impersonator.
Bob Gray, also know as
“Backwards Bob”, of Memory Edge, kept
adults and children alike laughing and
learning with his highly energized
presentation at Monday morning’s “Picky
Principal’s Breakfast” on improving
memory skills.
Following breakfast, at the Annual
General Meeting, president Namby
Vithiananthan reviewed the activities of
the Association over the past year, and
told delegates he expected the utility
construction activity in the GTA to
maintain or increase its present high
volume of work for at least another
year.
Alf Brown, Head-Carrier Enforcement
Liaison for the Ontario’s Ministry of
Transportation, addressed the old and
new Commercial Vehicle Operators
Registration regulations and answered a
number of the delegates’ questions and
the reasons behind some of the
regulations.
The golfers loaded their clubs onto the
golf carts following a quick lunch at
the hotel, and formed a convoy heading
to The Rock Golf Course for the annual
convention golf tournament. The highly
suspect winners of this tournament were
awarded their prizes at the final
banquet on Tuesday night.
The highly anticipated annual theme
party was held Monday night “Behind The
Bleachers”. Delegates of all ages came
dressed as their favorite (or least
favorite) school or college character
for a healthy dinner of hamburgers,
pizza, french fries, potato salad and
popcorn. The music of Pauly and the
Goodfellas highlighted the 50’s, 60’s
and 70’s top hits and kept the party
going well into the night.
Following a hearty
“Laughing Librarian’s Breakfast” on the
Lakeside Lawn in The Tent at The Rosseau
the winners of the 2010 Safety
Performance Awards were announced. All
delegates of every age then entered the
dangerous “Amazon Jungle” for a
teambuilding game in which they went in
search of the elusive lost diamonds, the
“Jungle Fire”. Led by Piranha Bob, they
encountered many dangerous creatures,
impassable obstacles, unfriendly natives
and dead-end trails.
The convention wrapped up on Tuesday
evening at the formal “Royal Gala
Reception and Banquet” at which the golf
awards were presented to the winners of
the various competitions held during the
golf tournament on Monday afternoon. The
2011-2012 slate of Officers were
introduced, and the location of next
year’s convention, The Westin Trillium
House at Blue Mountain was announced.
Following an exceptional dinner, the
exciting musical group, Alter Ego of
Montreal, kept the delegates on the
dance floor with a show full of energy
for hours, including two encores.
The outstanding
entertainment at every event was
arranged for and supervised by Carol
Priest, and the ballroom was
magnificently decorated in French Bistro
for Sunday, then converted to a school
gymnasium for Monday and finally
redecorated as a Royal Palace dining
room for the Tuesday Royal Gala, all
under the imagination and direction of
Lin Joyce. The UCA convention delegates
thank them for their amazing work.
